The opening hours of debated centered on whether or not provisions of the ACA could be severed from the rest of the law, namely the individual mandate, the requirement that individuals must purchase health insurance or pay a penalty. The court discussed three scenarios should the mandate fall: dump the entire law, keep the rest of the law intact minus the mandate, or delete portions along with the mandate but keep the remainder.
In the afternoon, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments related to the law’s expansion of Medicaid, and whether or not this violates states’ rights. Kaiser Health News compiled several articles from the nation’s leading news publications on the day’s proceedings, both on the severability and Medicaid arguments.
