Organized Medicine Wins Seats Under the Dome

Six Texas Medical Association (TMA) physicians and one spouse of a TMA physician won their races last night to serve in the 83rd Texas Legislature. An unprecedented number of physicians ran for office this election season with the hope they could bring their experience caring for patients to lawmaking and improve Texas’ health care system.

In the Texas Senate, Drs. Bob Deuell (R-Greenville), Charles Schwertner (R-Georgetown), and Donna Campbell (R-New Braunfels) all secured victories. In the other chamber, Texas House seats were won by Susan King (R-Abilene) and Drs. John Zerwas (R-Simonton), Greg Bonnen (R-Friendswood), and J.D. Sheffield, (R-Gatesville). U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess, MD (R-Lewisville), also won his reelection. He was first elected to his congressional seat in 2002.
