National Medical Societies Caution Against Unnecessary Tests

Seventeen national medical specialty societies joined the Choosing Wisely campaign, adding 90 more tests or procedures to its caution list. Choosing Wisely encourages patients to ask questions and become more involved in their medical care and encourages doctors to pause before performing tests under certain circumstances. The campaign now has 25 national medical societies on board.

The new recommendations include not prescribing antibiotics for sinus infections, not performing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for lower back pain, and holding off on performing stress tests for patients with no sign of heart disease.

Check out "Things Physicians and Patients Should Question" for the entire list.
