In June, the American Medical Association determined obesity
is a disease. Many in the health care field welcome the new classification,
while others have their misgivings, reports NPR’s
Shots blog. Proponents argue that by labeling obesity a disease,
more obese Americans will be able to seek help and get healthier. Under the
Affordable Care Act, more insurance plans will cover obesity-related health
care, including counseling, medications, and even surgery.
Opponents of the new classification argue not everyone who
is overweight is in danger of future disease and needs immediate health care
intervention. Still, obese individuals are “at greater risk of high blood
pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, sleep apnea, infertility, depression,
and diabetes,” reports NPR. Read
