CDC: Antibiotic Overuse Can Be Deadly

The next time you want antibiotics, don’t be surprised if your doctor says no. Doctors and hospitals are working to cut back on the amount of antibiotics they prescribe to patients, citing reports that antibiotic overuse creates superbugs and makes patients susceptible to other diseases. One such disease is Clostridium difficile, a life-threatening bacterial infection that can cause severe diarrhea. The rise of C. difficile in hospitalized patients is detailed in a March Vital Signs report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to the CDC, when a patient takes antibiotics, the drug kills off good bacteria that prevent infections as well as the intended bad bacteria for weeks or even months, leaving the patient vulnerable to new infections. Read more about the report at the Wall Street Journal.
